The staff at Make Way for Books is dedicated to ensuring our youngest children have the early literacy and learning opportunities they need to thrive in school and in life. We work together, along with volunteers and board members, to provide thousands of books and innovative programming to more than 18,000 children, families, and educators throughout southern Arizona each year.

What is your job title and role at Make Way for Books?
I am the Distribution Specialist at Make Way for Books. I help order and prepare the books and materials that are given out in our community.
What does a day at Make Way for Books look like for a Distribution Specialist?
Lots of opening boxes, putting books and supplies in bags, and ordering materials. All of that means handling lots and LOTS of books! On an average day, I spend time placing orders of quality books and supplies chosen by our team. When they come in, I work with volunteers to pack and organize the bags! I also help coordinate how the bags get out into the community so they can be enjoyed by kids, families, and educators alike!
How long have you been at Make Way for Books and how did you get here?
I have been with Make Way for Books for two and a half years. I fell in love with children’s books and early education while working at the Pima County Public Library, so I applied to work for Make Way for Books after attending college. It’s been a great way to learn more about children’s literature and social justice, all while having fun at work!
How would you explain your job to a 5-year-old?
In my job, I get to be like Santa Claus! I work on a team to get books and learning supplies for kids all over Tucson, then wrap them up and send them out into the community.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of this job is driving around town to bring books and supplies to kids, educators, and families!
What are you most proud of in your work at Make Way for Books?
I’m proud to work for an organization that values social justice, diversity, and literacy. I’m really grateful to work on a supportive team that values these causes.
What is your favorite children’s book? Why?
Tough question! My favorite older children’s book is Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are because of the illustrations. My favorite newer children’s book is We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, illustrated by Michaela Goade. I love how it combines environmental and social justice issues, through the use of lyrical prose and beautiful, colorful pictures!
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
When I’m not working, I love keeping busy! I like listening to music, hiking, and spending time with my three sweet—but trouble-making—guinea pigs.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I love reading fairytales! They were some of my favorite stories as a kid, and even now, I love reading and learning about anything magical or make-believe.
What do you look forward to at Make Way for Books in the future?
I look forward to the opportunity to read more books and deliver them to our community members! There are always opportunities to read, learn, and grow together.

En un día normal, dedico tiempo a realizar pedidos de libros y materiales de calidad elegidos por nuestro equipo. Cuando llegan, trabajo con los voluntarios para preparar y organizar las bolsas. ¡También ayudo a coordinar cómo las bolsas llegan a la comunidad para que las disfruten los niños, las familias y los educadores por igual!
¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en Make Way for Books y cómo llegaste aquí?
He trabajado en Make Way for Books por dos años y medio. Me enamoré de los libros para niños y la educación temprana mientras trabajaba en la Biblioteca Pública del Condado de Pima, así que apliqué para trabajar en Make Way for Books después de asistir a la universidad. Ha sido una excelente manera de aprender más sobre la literatura infantil y la justicia social, ¡al mismo tiempo te diviertes en el trabajo!

¿Cuál es tu libro infantil favorito? ¿Por qué?
¡Pregunta difícil! Mi libro favorito para niños mayores es Donde Viven los Monstruos, de Maurice Sendak, por las ilustraciones. Mi más reciente libro infantil favorito es Somos Protectores del Agua de Carole Lindstrom, ilustrado por Michaela Goade. ¡Me encanta cómo combina cuestiones ambientales y de justicia social, mediante el uso de prosa lírica e imágenes hermosas y coloridas!
¿Qué te gusta hacer cuando no estás trabajando?
Cuando no estoy trabajando, ¡me encanta mantenerme ocupada! Me gusta escuchar música, ir de excursión y pasar tiempo con mis tres dulces, pero problemáticos, conejillos de indias.
¿Qué es algo que la mayoría de la gente no sabe sobre ti?
¡Amo leer cuentos de hadas! Eran algunas de mis historias favoritas cuando era niña, e incluso ahora, me encanta leer y aprender sobre cualquier cosa mágica o imaginaria.
¿Qué esperas de tu futuro en Make Way for Books?
¡Espero tener la oportunidad de leer más libros y entregarlos a los miembros de nuestra comunidad! Siempre hay oportunidades para leer, aprender y crecer juntos.
