Meet Jamie!

What is your job title and role at Make Way for Books?

I am an Early Literacy Specialist and I get the opportunity to work with educators all over Arizona! In my role, I facilitate professional development opportunities and I also get to work as a literacy coach with several teachers.

What does a day at Make Way for Books look like for an Early Literacy Specialist? What are you working on right now?

Every day is different for me! Some days, I start by visiting classrooms and spending time with teachers and their students.  I get the chance to read stories, participate in classroom activities, and support teachers as a literacy coach.  Some days, I spend time in the office planning for my visits to classrooms, reading new books, or taking classes of my own; I am always learning something new! Other days, I get to give professional development trainings to teachers in person or over Zoom.  Every day, I enjoy sharing ideas with my colleagues and working together to plan and prepare for all the work ahead.

Right now, my team and I are in the first wave of our statewide grant and we are working to bring Make Way for Books to teachers all over Arizona.  This is a new opportunity and is very exciting!

How long have you been at Make Way for Books?

I started at Make Way for Books in September of 2022, so I have been here just a little over 6 months.  I learned about Make Way for Books when we received many beautiful books to support the children I worked with in my previous job at a local children’s hospital.  I wanted to learn more about the organization and so I spent some time looking through the website; by the time I was done exploring the website, I was completely inspired by the Make Way for Books mission! I have been in education and working with children since I got my first job at an after-school program when I was in high school.  While working at the after-school program, I remember giving my first read-aloud and feeling how powerful and important that time was connecting with students over a book.  That is why I knew I needed to apply for the open Early Literacy Specialist role that I noticed after exploring the Make Way for Books website!

How would you explain your job to a 5-year-old?

I get to be a helper for your teacher.  Teachers are always learning new things just like you are, and I get to help them learn just like they help you!

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is that I get to work with such an amazing group of people!  My colleagues are insightful, creative, and have wonderful ideas.  I also get to meet incredible educators all over the state and have discussions about my favorite thing…education.  Having been a teacher myself, I know how hard educators work, and I have a deep respect for the time, effort, and love they put into doing their jobs every day. I find it to be an honor to be able to offer teachers support.

What are you most proud of in your work at Make Way for Books?

I am most proud of offering support and materials to teachers that they can use right away in their classrooms.  One of our core values at Make Way for Books is to empower others, and this is incredibly inspiring to me.  Make Way for Books explains this core value with these statements:

“We are in the business of realizing potential. We all have what it takes.”

This is a personal core value of mine as well, so it is incredibly fulfilling to be able to spend my time at work embodying this value; I am so grateful!

What is your favorite children’s book? Why?

I have so many favorites, so it is hard to narrow it down to just one! One of the favorites in our house has been Stuck by Oliver Jeffers.  In this book, a little boy named Floyd gets his kite stuck in a tree and then tries to problem-solve the situation by throwing all kinds of different objects into the tree as well.  This story is funny and very silly, so it is always entertaining to see what will be going into the tree next.  Also, as a younger kiddo, this was the book that my daughter first recognized a set of words as we read together, and she loved to say, “They all got stuck!” when we were reading; so, it is extra special for us.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

When I’m not working, I love to be with my family and friends.  You can often find me sitting around and chatting on the phone or out and about and chatting with people I meet in person.  I also enjoy taking my daughter to her activities and school functions.  I love to exercise and meditate when I can but am not an expert in either.  My family and I also enjoy chances to slow down and relax while watching a movie, reading a book, and of course, snuggling with our very cuddly dog.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

My favorite kind of exercise is weightlifting! I think it is a lot of fun and I find myself wanting to learn more about it all the time.  Also, if I could have one talent, I would choose to have an incredible singing voice.  So far, that isn’t my reality, but I will keep crossing my fingers😊

What do you look forward to at Make Way for Books in the future?

I look forward to continuing to do the important work that we are doing every day at Make Way for Books.  I am excited to get to take our services statewide, and I look forward to continuing to learn more every day!

¡Conoce a Jamie!

¿Cuál es tu puesto y función en Make Way for Books?

¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en Make Way for Books?

Make Way for Books explica este valor central con estas declaraciones:

¿Qué esperas de Make Way for Books en el futuro?
