What do children need to thrive? Food and shelter, love and support. But what about play? As it turns out, fun is serious business!
Play is essential to children’s development, helping them build essential cognitive, motor, and social skills. On top of that, play has a crucial therapeutic effect. When kids play, they can destress, express themselves, and connect with the people they love. Play is especially important for children facing challenges like illness.
In recognition of the importance of play, Tucson’s Diamond Children’s Medical Center recently opened a world-class 7,200 square foot Play Zone full of art supplies, games, and toys for children of all ages.
“This space is more than just a play area. It’s a vital part of our mission to help children heal holistically,” said Hadley Trull, Associate Director of the hospital’s Child Life program. “The Play Zone provides an opportunity for kids to relax in a space where no medical treatments or procedures take place, to express themselves creatively, work through difficult emotions, and feel more like a regular kid.”
Make Way for Books was proud to contribute a library to this beautiful space. As we’ve seen time and time again, books provide families opportunities to connect, relax, and learn together. We hope many families find comfort with the stories in this nook.
We were grateful to participate in the Play Zone opening. It was so inspiring to be surrounded by people in our community who are similarly invested in the wellbeing of children!
