This Month’s Book: The Day You Begin
Our Cover to Cover Book of the Month for March is The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson.
Vulnerability can be scary, but can also foster great connections! The Day You Begin beautifully depicts how it feels to be vulnerable. While reading, talk with your child about how they think the characters might feel: “How do you think Angelina feels while she’s sharing the story of her summer? Why do you think that?” Further explore the concept of vulnerability by having a conversation with your child about the expressions on the characters’ faces. Children build empathy as they have opportunities to identify and talk about others’ emotions.
You haven’t been vulnerable until you have danced the Tooty Ta with your child. Be prepared to be silly and have so much fun when you follow this link to the song: https://youtu.be/fmU58TPlHkU
While reading, talk to your child about a time that you felt vulnerable. Invite your child to remember a time they felt scared or left out. Having these beautiful conversations with your child will not only provide a wonderful opportunity to bond, but will also help build their vocabulary!
Having a security item can help your child feel safe! And feeling safe can help with the most difficult of times. Create or give your child a special item to reassure them when they might feel scared or nervous. Creating something together can help remind your child of their connection to you. It could be anything from a painted rock to a decorated popsicle stick! Find this and other great activities on our app!
